Karen Schowalter is currently a second year osteopathic medical student at Pacific Northwest University in Yakima, WA. It was the practice of meditation that helped her resign from her 20+ year genetic laboratory career to pursue her dream of becoming a person who is present and hopefully helpful to those who seek healing. She held several positions throughout her career from bench technologist to supervisor in several labs from the University of Washington to the Mayo Clinic in Minnesota developing DNA tests to diagnose and predict disease. She enjoys medical ethic challenges and plans to finish a master’s degree from Loyola in 2014 in Ethics and Health Policy. She has four daughters, two in college and two at home. She is the widow of a physician and very grateful for the 17 incredible years they shared in marriage.
